Sacramento residents can welcome the new year at “Countdown on the Cobblestones,” a New Year’s Eve celebration centered on a dramatic light and fireworks show at the Old Sacramento Waterfront.

The free, family-friendly event runs from 5-10 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 31 and features live music, interactive activities and a single countdown with a custom fireworks display at 9 p.m. The celebration offers an early family-friendly evening alternative to traditional midnight festivities.

“This event is all about creating a memorable New Years’ experience that feels special to Old Sacramento, with fireworks and light bringing the historic waterfront to life in a way people can enjoy together earlier in the evening,” said Chelsea Evans, district manager for the Old Sacramento Waterfront.

Entertainment and activities will take place throughout the district along K Street and Front Street, with live performances by Rituals of Mine, DJ Epik, Element Brass Band, Lab Rats and DJ El Indio, with additional acts throughout the evening.

The highlight of the night begins at 9 p.m. with a countdown and fireworks and light show at the intersection of Front and K streets. Pyro Spectaculars Inc., in partnership with Stage Nine Exhibits, will produce a fireworks and light display in front of the Holiday Tree.

The custom-designed presentation will illuminate the space between Old Sacramento’s historic buildings, creating a close-up fireworks experience unique to the waterfront setting.

Organizers emphasized there will be only one countdown at 9 p.m. and no midnight show.

All festivities conclude at 10 p.m.

Parking and road closures

The district will be closed to vehicular traffic during the event. Attendees are encouraged to use nearby parking garages, rideshare services or public transit.

Road closures begin at 2 p.m. and extend through 1 a.m. Streets affected include Second, Front, K, J and I streets as well as Firehouse Alley. L Street and Neasham Circle will remain open for limited access.

Prepaid parking will be available at the Old Sacramento Garage and Tower Bridge Garage for $20 beginning at 3 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. Sacramento Regional Transit bus routes serving the area include 11, 30, 31, 62, 86 and 88.

In addition, a complimentary Tuk Tuk shuttle service, in partnership with Capital Tuk Tuk, will operate throughout the district to help guests get around once they park. Each Tuk Tuk holds up to six guests and operates on a first-come, first-served basis.

Tuk Tuk pickup locations will be available near Front Street and L Street and at Second Street and I Street. Drop-off and post-event pickup will take place at the center of K Street.
