(US MEIDA GROUP) – It’s no secret that drinking and driving can result in serious consequences, but a recent study by Lending Tree has shed light on just how prevalent DUI cases are in some of the largest cities in the United States.

According to the study, Sacramento has ranked among the top five cities with the highest DUI rates, based on data from 50 cities across the country. The surprising ranking has placed the capital city above popular California destinations such as Los Angeles, San Diego, and Oakland.

For every 1,000 drivers in Sacramento, 1.31 have been found to be driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. The next highest city on the list is Raleigh, North Carolina, with a rate of 1.46 DUIs per 1,000 drivers.

California cities dominate the top ten positions, with eight cities listed, including Los Angeles, San Jose, Bakersfield, Fresno, San Diego, Long Beach, and Oakland.

Insurance agent Rob Bhatt believes that California’s climate may play a role in the high rate of DUIs in the state. “With warm weather year-round, people may be more likely to go out and consume alcohol,” he explains.

Bhatt also suggests that stricter enforcement by law enforcement could potentially drive these numbers even higher. However, efforts are being made to combat DUI cases in California. On August 24, police departments, sheriff’s offices, and California Highway Patrol stations participated in “Saturation Saturday,” a coordinated effort to detect and arrest intoxicated drivers.

The consequences of a DUI can be severe, especially for young drivers. According to the State of California, a first-time DUI for a teen can result in upfront fines and fees of up to $5,400, along with insurance increases of $40,000 over 13 years, a one-year license suspension, and possible jail time.

For those 21 and over, the penalties can be even more severe, including mandatory jail time, thousands of dollars in fines and fees, license suspension or revocation, restricted driving, and the requirement of an ignition interlock device. In the event of a death, a DUI conviction can even result in lifetime imprisonment.

As California continues to work towards reducing the number of DUI cases, it serves as a reminder to all drivers to think twice before getting behind the wheel while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The consequences of a DUI not only affect the individual, but also the safety of others on the road. Stay safe, and always have a plan for a safe ride home.
