(US MEDIA GROUP) – Alpha Kappa Alpha, the prestigious historically Black sorority known for its notable alumni, including Vice President Kamala Harris, has taken a bold step in the political realm by creating a political action committee (PAC).

The AKA 1908 PAC, also known as the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority PAC, Inc., will be able to accept donations of up to $5,000 from members of the sorority and their families to support federal campaigns and political parties. This is an unusual venture for a sorority, but one that has been sparked by the chance to send one of their own to the White House.

AKA is part of a collective of the countryโ€™s oldest and most prestigious sororities and fraternities, known as the โ€œDivine Nine.โ€ With a network of over 2 million alumni, the Divine Nine holds a powerful political force among a constituency that both parties are hoping to mobilize ahead of the November election.

When Harris, a proud AKA member, was announced as Joe Bidenโ€™s running mate back in 2020, their campaign was flooded with donations of $19.08, a nod to the year of Alpha Kappa Alphaโ€™s founding. This gesture of support continued as Harris and Biden hit the campaign trail, with Harris hosting an event at the White House for the leaders of the Divine Nine, a first in history, according to POLITICO.

Since then, the leaders of the Divine Nine have routinely visited the White House or met with President Biden and Vice President Harris, including as recently as May, when Biden sought to strengthen his support among Black voters.

After Biden dropped out of the race and endorsed Harris, all nine Divine Nine presidents released a statement pledging to โ€œmeet this critical moment in history with an unprecedented voter registration, education, and mobilization coordinated campaign.โ€ While the statement did not mention specific candidates or parties, it was clear that the Divine Nine was fully supporting Harris and her historic run for the White House.

The AKA 1908 PACโ€™s treasurer, Kiahna Davis, a regional director at AKA for the Central region, has yet to release a statement regarding the PAC. Harris has always held AKA and the Divine Nine in high regard, even stating that the members are like โ€œfamilyโ€ to her.

Harris has also made it a priority to attend events for other Divine Nine sororities and fraternities, with her first public event after becoming the de facto Democratic nominee being a gathering for Zeta Phi Beta. She also addressed Alpha Kappa Alphaโ€™s Boulรฉ, or gathering, earlier this summer. A rally in Atlanta shortly after also featured several Divine Nine alumni in positions of political power.

Although AKA 1908 PAC may be the first of its kind for a sorority, it is not the only Greek organization with a federal fundraising operation. Phi Beta Sigma, another Divine Nine fraternity, operates its own PAC, and fraternity and sorority leaders founded the Fraternity & Sorority Political Action Committee in 2005 to support candidates who uphold and enhance the fraternity and sorority experience.

With Harris breaking barriers as the first female, Black, and Asian American vice president, AKAโ€™s creation of a political action committee serves as a testament to the powerful impact and influence of the Divine Nine and their support for their own. As the country gears up for the next presidential election, the voice of the Divine Nine will surely be heard loud and clear.
