  1. Matt Barnes Basketball Camp – 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Wednesday, Aug. 7, through Aug. 9, at John F. Kennedy High School. This camp is for competitive boys and girls grades 4th-HS, $300 per player. Players will get a camp shirt and drinks provided. Bring your own ball and lunch. There will be training and games directed by player development coach Sam Luong and special guests. The camp is hosted by “Sac-Towns finest” 14-year NBA veteran, 2017 Champion podcast/media sensation and Sacramento’s very own, Matt Barnes.
  2. Sacramento Youth Summit – 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, at Sacramento State in the Sacramento Student Union. The summit is being led by Mayor Steinberg’s Office and co-sponsored by California State University, Sacramento. This summit will bring together youth ages 16-24, employers, educators, and service providers to highlight what young people need from the workforce development ecosystem.
  3. Financial Literacy Seminar: Savings & Investing 2.0 – 12-1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, at Oak Point Events. This Lunch & Learn event is open to everyone. Enjoy a free lunch and learn how to make the most of your finances. There will be an experienced educator on hand to provide the tools you need to make smart financial decisions and to answer all your questions at the end of the seminar.
  4. St. HOPE’s Back to School BBQ – 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, at McClatchy Park. They’re going to provide delicious BBQ, fun activities, school supplies and much more. Students must be present to receive school supplies and supplies will be distributed based upon first-come-first-serve arrival.
  5. Mother Juliet & Her Romeo – 7 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays, Aug. 11, through Aug. 27, at Celebration Arts. Come and enjoy this ​​William Shakespeare adaptation, directed by Khimberly Marshall, described as an “intensely passionate” work of “poetry, bliss and unabashed heartbreak” set deep in the Louisiana bayou, an old bootlegger and a retired showgirl find love at first sight in the most unusual place — a Mardi Gras party during prohibition sometime in the future. 
  6. Josh’s Heart Homeless Connect – 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, at Sacramento State’s Folsom Hall. The Homeless Connect is a one-day event offering the homeless a chance to meet with local and state agencies and receive services, get some food, listen to live music and have some fun. They will have; day-of-bus passes, portable showers, mobile dental and optical to include a mobile lab, California IDs, new clothes, socks and haircuts.
  7. Let’s Read Oak Park – 10-11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, at Underground Books. Let’s Read Oak Park is presented by St. HOPE for elementary school aged children to explore books and participate in hands-on activities with an emphasis on cultural themes. Students will engage in interactive book readings, and select a free book of their choice to take home and encourage reading together as a family. This month’s theme is Back to School.
  8. Blockworks – 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, on Del Paso Blvd. Come out and enjoy a summer-day market, day party, art auction and wellness workshops. There is also a play zone for kids. There will be a movie screening from 7-10 p.m. The movies are to be determined.
  9. Joyous Black Girl Social – 11:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, at Santa Anita Park. The Joyous Black Girl movement was created to support Black Women in exploring joy as a tool for healing. Bring your blankets, food and your girls. This year they will have vendors for you to support local black owned businesses.
  10. Thriver’s Photography Exhibition – 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, at Sacramento City College Russ Solomon Gallery. Tamara M. Knox showcases her portraits of community thrivers and their accounts of changing their narratives. Her work is centered on enabling people to feel celebrated, empowered, uplifted, safe and confident.
  11. Hip-Hop 50th Anniversary – 8 p.m.-1 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, at Our Place Event Space & Kitchen. They’re bringing together the four main elements of hip hop – the dj, the emcee, the b-boy, and the graffiti artist, for a one-night-only event. They’ve got DJ Caz, DJ Epik, Fooders, Keith the DJ and Tone Pesci locked in and ready to spin the classics you know and love.
  12. Monthly Adult Sk8 Party with Dj Wayne D – 11 p.m.-3 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, at Sunrise Rollerland. 2-Raw Sk8rs took a month off, but they are back with DJ Wayne D rollin in from LA. Adults only. Tickets are $18 in advance and $25 at the door, including quad skate rental if needed.
  13. Vibrate Higher: Sacramento Unity Drum Circle – 3:30-6:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 13, at Estate Farms. Spend an evening with the Sacramento-Unity African Drumming Circle Collective as they host their monthly drumming circle, setting a collective intention for the city of Sacramento to #VIBRATEHIGHER.
