The Capital Black Chamber of Commerce marked a powerful milestone on Feb. 21 at the SAFE Credit Union Convention Center, celebrating 40 years of economic empowerment at its “Capital Nights” 40th Anniversary Installation & Awards Gala in downtown Sacramento.

The black-tie affair transformed the ballroom into a Harlem Renaissance-inspired scene, decorated in black, gold, and white. Guests arrived in floor-length gowns, tailored tuxedos, and vintage silhouettes, representing the evening’s theme of legacy, leadership, and cultural pride.

The celebration honored the Chamber’s 40-year commitment to advancing Black-owned businesses and strengthening the region’s economic sector.

In a message to attendees, President and CEO Azizza Davis-Goines reflected on the Chamber’s mission to empower today’s leaders while building the way for future generations.

“To another 40 years of reflecting on our community, meeting its needs, and manifesting a distinct presence in the state to excel and grow in the wonderful work of leadership, entrepreneurship, and economic empowerment,” said Davis-Goines. “If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together.”

Dr. Marcellene Watson-Derbigny, Associate Vice President for Student Affairs at Sac State, echoed that sentiment, praising the Chamber’s role in anchoring businesses, cultivating partnerships, and building pathways for economic mobility.

“This celebration marks more than an anniversary; it represents a legacy of resilience, collaboration, and unwavering dedication to economic empowerment,” Watson-Derbigny said. “For 40 years, the Chamber has created spaces where businesses and cultural leadership thrive together, and that impact will continue to shape Sacramento for generations to come.”

The Capital Black Chamber of Commerce was established in 1984 as the Sacramento Black Chamber of Commerce to bring African American business owners and professionals together to build a strong economic foundation within Sacramento’s business community.

The group is made up of a network of dedicated, high-energy business professionals working together to improve the economic, cultural, and civic well-being of the African American community.

A highlight of the evening was the Chamber’s Youth Leadership Collaborative (YLC) presentation. The YLC program mentors and prepares young leaders through professional development, entrepreneurship training, civic engagement, and exposure to business and community leadership.

The Chamber welcomed its 2026 cohort, recognizing Isaiah Lamar Blackmon, Sabrina Charleston, Sania Compton, Matta Fallah, Sharla Long, Kristeen Oberoi, Aidan Ou, Karena Brenae Payden, Toni Starkey, and Daejon Young as the newest ambassadors of the Chamber’s future-focused vision.

The evening also featured a motivational keynote from Kevin Bracy, who encouraged attendees to embrace purpose-driven leadership and community-centered success.

In a symbolic moment of unity and responsibility, Sacramento Police Chief Kathy Lester led the Board Installation Ceremony, guiding incoming board members as they recited their vows to serve with integrity and dedication.

Beyond the awards and formalities, the night was a visual proof of excellence. Community leaders, entrepreneurs, educators, and public servants filled the room in timeless fashion, radiating pride and possibility.
