
Six area storytellers will be honored during a Woman on Fire Gala on Sunday, Oct. 19.
The semiformal gala is hosted by Sisters of Nia, a local African-centered program for middle school girls. The program aims to improve self-esteem, inspire self-motivation, reinforce positive peer relationships, develop a strong sense of social responsibility, and provide health education. Proceeds from the gala benefit Sisters of Nia programs.
Being recognized as โflame carriersโ during the 2025 Woman on Fire event are OBSERVER Senior Staff Writer Genoa Barrow; longtime โGood Day Sacramentoโ anchor Courtney Dempsey; Sac Cultural Hub founder Pleshette Robertson; filmmaker Alana I. Smith; KDEE 97.5 radio host and podcaster Wanda Smith; and California Transportation Commission Executive Director Tanisha Taylor.
โThe Woman on Fire Gala celebrates the incredible achievements of trailblazing Black women in the Sacramento area who are making a difference in our community,โ founder Synthia Smith said. โThis is more than just a night of recognition; itโs an evening of inspiration, connection, and empowerment.โ
The event is scheduled for 3-7 p.m. at the Dante Event Center, 2330 Fair Oaks Blvd.
