Six area storytellers will be honored during a Woman on Fire Gala on Sunday, Oct. 19.

The semiformal gala is hosted by Sisters of Nia, a local African-centered program for middle school girls. The program aims to improve self-esteem, inspire self-motivation, reinforce positive peer relationships, develop a strong sense of social responsibility, and provide health education. Proceeds from the gala benefit Sisters of Nia programs.

Being recognized as โ€œflame carriersโ€ during the 2025 Woman on Fire event are OBSERVER Senior Staff Writer Genoa Barrow; longtime โ€œGood Day Sacramentoโ€ anchor Courtney Dempsey; Sac Cultural Hub founder Pleshette Robertson; filmmaker Alana I. Smith; KDEE 97.5 radio host and podcaster Wanda Smith; and California Transportation Commission Executive Director Tanisha Taylor.

โ€œThe Woman on Fire Gala celebrates the incredible achievements of trailblazing Black women in the Sacramento area who are making a difference in our community,โ€ founder Synthia Smith said. โ€œThis is more than just a night of recognition; itโ€™s an evening of inspiration, connection, and empowerment.โ€

The event is scheduled for 3-7 p.m. at the Dante Event Center, 2330 Fair Oaks Blvd.
