As fall arrives in the Sacramento region, following what was a cooler-than-usual summer, I find myself reflecting on life in our beloved community.
Thereโs a popular segment on a national morning sports show that airs every Wednesday called โWhat Are You Mad About?โ Today, Iโd like to flip that script and share a few thoughts in a spirit of gratitude. Letโs call this column: โWhat Are You Thankful For?โ
Iโm thankful to have celebrated another birthday in reasonably good health, surrounded by a wonderful wife, children, grandchildren, a great-grandchild, and extended family.
Iโm thankful that, more than 50 years ago, I met Dr. William H. Lee, a meeting that sparked a lasting relationship with The Sacramento OBSERVER; a relationship that continues to this day.
Iโm thankful that The OBSERVER has grown to become widely recognized as the nationโs leading African American newspaper. Itโs an honor to be part of that legacy.
Iโm thankful to have had the opportunity to share my thoughts in this column for over 28 years. Itโs a privilege I donโt take lightly.
Iโm thankful to live in Northern California, where, aside from a handful of days over 100 degrees, we enjoy remarkable weather and easy access to beautiful destinations like Napa, San Francisco, Lake Tahoe, Monterey, Yosemite, Carmel, and the Gold Country.
Iโm thankful that Sacramento is home to a professional sports team we fought hard to keep. The Sacramento Kings not only bring NBA basketball to our city but help anchor the vibrant entertainment scene at Golden 1 Center.
Iโm thankful to live in one of the most racially diverse communities in the United States, a richness that brings depth and strength to our everyday lives.
And finally, Iโm thankful for my faith. Iโm a committed Christian, blessed to serve God through a good church, and I have peace in knowing where my journey leads when my time here is done.
So, as we step into this new season, I ask you: What are you thankful for?
