Staff Report

Celebration Arts, Sacramento’s premier Black theater, is pleased to present the fourth production in its 2025 Season, “Family Affair,” CHICKEN AND BISCUITS.

The Jenkins family is coming together to celebrate the life of their father — hopefully without killing each other. But any hopes for a peaceful reunion unravel when a family secret shows up at the funeral. With its lively characters, witty dialogue, and touching moments, CHICKEN AND BISCUITS serves up a feast of laughter, love, and soul-stirring drama that celebrates the power of family bonds.

Local writer, director, and actor Imani Mitchell returns to the Celebration Arts stage to co-direct this heartfelt family comedy. She most recently directed CRUMBS FROM THE TABLE OF JOY and her original play ZORA & LANGSTON. Joining her is fellow Sacramento-based director and actor Devin Valdez, whose recent work includes POTUS (Big Idea Theatre) and WAITING FOR GODINEZ (Teatro Espejo). This exciting collaboration brings together two dynamic voices in local theater to bring this story to life.

To add to the excitement, playwright Douglas Lyons will be in attendance for opening weekend. Lyons is a 2X Emmy-nominated multi-hyphenate artist. His Broadway debut, CHICKEN AND BISCUITS (2021), earned a GLAAD nomination and was the second most produced play in America during the 2022–23 season.

CHICKEN AND BISCUITS will be on stage August 8 – 24, 2025. Single tickets for the Family Affair season are available at celebrationarts.vbotickets.com.
