  1. Special Movie Screening of โ€™N.W.A.: Not Without Alonzoโ€™ 6-9 p.m. Monday, March 10, at the Guild Theater. This documentary chronicles the origins and evolution of West Coast hip-hop through the life and influence of Alonzo โ€œLonzoโ€ Williams. Known as the โ€œgodfather of West Coast hip-hop,โ€ Lonzoโ€™s journey began in 1976 as a young DJ and, over the years, he emerged as one of the most pivotal figures in the genre, discovering legendary artists like Dr. Dre, Ice Cube and many others who went on to revolutionize music. Jay King moderates the event. Tickets are $12.
  2. 2025 Legislative Open House Friday, March 14, is the application deadline. Are you ready to step into the shoes of a legislator for a day? The Legislative Open House is the Black Youth Leadership Projectโ€™s premier civic engagement program, shaping young leaders since 1999. This is your chance to debate real issues, hold mock committee hearings and take the floor in the official chambers of the California Legislature. Open to California students in eighth-12th grades.
  3. Dr. David Covin Scholarship Fund 2025 Friday, April 11, is the application deadline. The David Covin Scholarship Fund was established in 2023 to provide financial assistance to Black students. Applicants must be a permanent resident of Sacramento, must be completing or have completed high school and must be accepted as a full-time student at a college, university or trade school for the upcoming academic semester. Applications must be mailed to the Black Parallel School Board, 4625 44th St., Suite 5, Sacramento 95820.
  4. Street Soccer USA Sacramento 7th Annual Breakfast Event 7:15-9 a.m. Wednesday, March 12, at Sacramento Stateโ€™s Alumni Center. Breakfast, uplifting testimonies and networking, all for a great cause. In addition to providing adults with the tools they need to navigate recovery from alcohol and drug addiction, Street Soccer USA brings its programs to kids, creating safe places to play with trained, caring coaches and a proven curriculum that builds important life skills.   5. What You Know About That? Trivia Showdown with the Capital City Zetas 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, at the Lock and Key Tapas and Bar, 2718 J St. Test your knowledge and compete in this trivia showdown hosted by the Capital City Zetas. Bring your friends, grab a drink, get food and get ready to show off what you know. Tickets are $12.
  6. Lewis Belt 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, at Punch Line Comedy Club. The stand-up comedian, actor, and producer is known for his dynamic presence. Born and raised in north Oakland, he began his stand-up career at 18, performing at venues throughout the Bay Area. Tickets from $32.
  7. West Sacramento Womenโ€™s History Month Art Show 2025 6-8 p.m. Thursday, March 13, at Gallery 1075 at the West Sacramento Community Center, 1075 West Capitol Ave. This group exhibition celebrates women and female artists in the community. Enjoy amazing multimedia works by local artists, enjoy light refreshments and converse with passionate creators. Free and open to the public.
  8. โ€˜Wickedโ€™ 7:30-10 p.m. Thursday, March 13, at Sacramento Stateโ€™s University Union Ballroom. This film adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical tells the untold story of Elphaba, the misunderstood girl born with green skin, and Glinda, the popular yet complex young woman. As their unlikely friendship evolves at Shiz University, their paths diverge, shaping their destinies as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good.   13. Black Hair & Black Hygiene Collective Drive & Give-A-Way Event 10:30 a.m.-noon Saturday, March 15, at Florin United Methodist Church, 7560 Florin Road. The collection drive will feature collecting personal hygiene items (travel-size toothpaste, afro pics, petroleum jelly, hair grease, lotions, toothbrushes, soaps and hand warmers) and warm clothing items (beanies, socks, scarves, gloves, tarps and belts) for the unhoused and others. Theyโ€™ll also disseminate items to the unhoused and other community members. Free and open to the public.
  14. Daddy-Daughter Bracelet Making 1:30-2:45 p.m. Saturday, March 15, at the African Market Place, 2251 Florin Road. Come for a fun-filled day of creativity and bonding between fathers and daughters. Dads and their princesses will have the opportunity to design and create their own unique bracelet together.   21. SANKOFA FEST 7-9 p.m. Sunday, March 16, at Sacramento Stateโ€™s University Union Ballroom. A night filled with music, art and culture. Donโ€™t miss out on this opportunity to connect with the community. At Option Forward, they aim to build community, create valuable resources and shine a light on overlooked societal topics. In collaboration with Dr. Clarence George III from Sacramento State and the universityโ€™s Sankofa Research Team, theyโ€™re embarking on an ambitious documentary project exploring identity and ancient artifacts linked to Africa.
