- LET IT GO, SIS! – 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, at 520 Ninth St. #102. An in-house women’s support group for African American/Black women held every second and fourth Wednesday monthly. A curated space to give and receive words of encouragement, motivation, and mental and emotional support amongst a collective of Sistahs. Free, attendees must register.
- Tea w/ TrapTranquility – 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, at Unleashed Event Space, 1361 Fulton Ave. This community circle and sound healing experience will offer meditation, celebration and tranquility in the form of a sound bath, circle reflections and a guest goodie bag for attendees. - “When We Were Colored: A Mother’s Story” – 7-9:30 p.m. Wednesday-Friday, Nov. 13-15, at the Guild Theater. Ginger Rutland shares her powerful story about an ordinary Black family living through extraordinary times in America. Get ready to be inspired by her journey as a mother. - Volunteer Training and Orientation for the Black Hair & Hygiene Project – 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, via Zoom. The Black Hair and Hygiene Project is designed to provide culturally appropriate health and hygiene products to Black unhoused in the Sacramento area. Community volunteers will assist the co-founders with set-up and breakdown at community events and assist with collecting and disseminating the products at various community events and engaging unhoused community members. - Author Talk with Dr. Mia Settles-Tidwell – 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, at Underground Books. Dr. Mia Settles-Tidwell is the founder and president/CEO of Set-Up for Success, a leading educational consulting agency. She is a prolific writer for justice and author of “Unscathed: A Harm Reduction Strategy for Women of Color in the Workplace” and numerous articles focused on leadership development, organizational health, personal and professional sustainability, and social justice. - 6th International Conference on Genocide – 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Thursday, 8 a.m.-8:30 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m.-3:45 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14-16, at Sacramento State’s University Union. This year’s conference features special sessions and events on the 30th commemoration of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. The late Dr. Alexander Kimenyi, a Rwandan professor of ethnic studies who inaugurated the International Conferences on Genocide at Sacramento State, also will be honored. Tickets are $100. - Blue Diamond Urban Roots Golden Lager Launch Event – 5:30-10 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, at Urban Roots Brewery and Smokehouse, 1322 V St. You’re invited to an evening of beer, snacks and football. Attend the Barrel Room at Urban Roots to view the UCLA-Washington football game at 6 p.m. Plus, get a preview of Urban Roots’ new Golden Lager, brewed custom for Blue Diamond. - 2024 All That Jazz Dinner and Auction – 5:30-10 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, at Folsom Community Center. Join an evening of live music from the Folsom High jazz bands and choir along with the Sutter Middle School jazz band while enjoying a fantastic catered dinner with a live auction and raffle. Also featured is the famous “wall of wine,” with more than 100 bottles. This is a 21-and-older event. Tickets are $69.
- Keenan Baker – Live Comedy – 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 15-16, at Laughs Unlimited Comedy Club. Keenan’s energetic style and storytelling bring his real life to the stage and laughter to crowds all over. Tickets are $29.
- Karlous Miller – Live Comedy – 7 p.m. Friday-Sunday and 9:15 p.m. Friday-Saturday, Nov. 15-17, at Punch Line Comedy Club. Miller originally gained fame as a stand-up comedian and also appeared on MTV’s “Wild ’N Out,” a comedy improvisation show hosted by Nick Cannon. His quick wit, unique style and ability to go back and forth with fellow comedians have made him a fan favorite. Tickets from $44.
- 2024 Business and Community Awards Luncheon – 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, at Sheraton Grand Sacramento. Empowerment workshops, a delicious lunch and a great keynote to raise money for community service programs. Tickets from $125.
- Sacramento NAACP Legal Redress Committee – 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Nov. 16, via Zoom. Do you have a racially related legal issue? The Sacramento NAACP Legal Redress Committee hosts a monthly call on third Saturdays for people who have a possible legal complaint. Please fill out the complaint form and register for the event.
