The 2024 Sacramento race for mayor has been one of the most hotly contested races in this city’s history. Following the race of four candidates in the March primary, for the first time ever, two African American candidates emerged for the general election: Dr. Flojaune “Flo” Cofer and Kevin McCarty.
Sacramento is at an important crossroads. The last two terms under current Mayor Darrell Steinberg have been challenging for sure. Some of the things this seasoned politician has had to navigate include: the killing of Stephon Clark, the growing unhoused population, the local response to the COVID pandemic and an exodus of people and businesses from Sacramento’s downtown core. It feels like a very long time since former Mayor Kevin Johnson was in office — an era that saw unprecedented enthusiasm and investment in our city.
Sacramento is in need of an inspirational leader: someone who can govern and galvanize; someone who can legislate and motivate; someone who can challenge us and be our champion.
The OBSERVER editors believe Dr. Cofer is such a leader which is why we are endorsing her for mayor of Sacramento.
As a seasoned public health professional, Cofer brings the vision needed to lead Sacramento into a new era. She is untethered to traditional politics and offers a fresh perspective on how to tackle some of our most challenging issues.
But it is her infectious enthusiasm and willingness to listen and serve that sets Cofer apart. She has an ability to connect in a meaningful way to nearly every resident and clearly leads with her head and her heart.
As the first Black woman to run for mayor of Sacramento, Cofer represents bold, historic leadership. Her dedication to creating opportunities for all Sacramentans, especially Black and underserved communities, is the change Sacramento needs.
We encourage our readers to make history by voting for Dr. Flo Cofer.
