- SBCC Small Business Workshop – DGS Contracts & Procurement Opportunities – 5:30-7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, via Zoom. Hosted in conjunction with the California Department of General Services Office of Small Business and Disabled Veteran Business Enterprise Services, this virtual workshop is free to anyone interested in learning more about doing business with the State. Attendees must register.
- Sacramento Racial Equity Alliance Listening Sessions – 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, via Zoom. The purpose is to ensure that our diverse residents have an opportunity to provide meaningful input on how the city prioritizes and invests in racial equity. Your lived experiences are powerful and a vital contribution to this discussion. Input from the listening sessions will be used to inform the city’s racial equity resolution. The Zoom link will be shared via email after registration is complete.
- Mahogany Urban Poetry Series – 7-10 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, at Our Place Event Space and Kitchen, 1107 Firehouse Alley. A showcase for talented poets from diverse backgrounds, sharing their unique perspectives and stories. Featuring an open mic for singers, comedians, poets and a special performance featuring two of the Mahogany veterans, Khiry Malik and NSAA. Tickets are $15.
- Lance Woods – 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, at Punch Line Comedy Club. The Sacramento native is one of the hottest, most sought after young comedians today. His high-energy style, unique storytelling ability and clever punchlines give him universal appeal. Tickets from $25.
- We Love The Skin You’re In: Senior Photo Sessions By The OBSERVER – 12-4:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30, at 1825 Del Paso Blvd, Suite #1. The OBSERVER is celebrating community elders and invites area seniors to participate in a series of special photoshoots with our award-winning photographers Louis Bryant III and Russell Stiger, Jr. Photos will be showcased in the newspaper and online as part of Senior Staff Writer Genoa Barrow’s coverage on Blacks and aging. Bring Your: Self, Sisters & Brothers, Mother, Father, Uncle, Grandfather, Grandmother, Sorority Sisters, Fraternity Brothers. RSVP required to participate.
- The Cali Dream State – 7-10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30, at the Guild Theater. Daydreamers Records presents an epic concert featuring performances from Work Dirty, a Vallejo native related to E-40; Gritty Lex, a Sacramento native and rising star, fresh off performances from Rolling Loud; Jerm Deeezy, also hailing from Sacramento, fresh off tour with Wifisfuneral; and Healing Heels, founded by Miss Black Sacramento Queen Jayda Irene. Dedicated to healing through movement and inspiring confidence through dance. Tickets are $23.
- LOVE JONES VIBES (Poetry & Music Show) – 7:30-10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30, at Our Place Event Space and Kitchen, 1107 Firehouse Alley. Featuring performances from award-winning poets and singers. After the show, stick around for music and dancing until midnight. Buy one ticket, get one free. Tickets are $13.
- Night Fever – Disco Party – 10 p.m.-1 a.m. Friday, Aug. 30, at Powerhouse, 614 Sutter St, Folsom. Rewind it back to the groovy days of disco with Night Fever, the sensational five-piece cover band that brings the glittering energy of the disco era to life. You’ll hear hit songs from GQ, Heatwave, KC & The Sunshine Band, Barry White, The Village People, Donna Summer, Chic, Abba, Rod Stewart, The BeeGees and more. Tickets are $18.
- Empower & Nourish: Breastfeeding Q&A and Self-Care for the Black Community – 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, at Reason Center, 1300 Ethan Way No. 675. This free event is open to all Black pregnant and lactating parents (pre-crawling babies are welcome too) and is sponsored by Sacramento Breastfeeding Coalition’s African American Subcommittee. Bring your lactation questions and learn more about local support resources. The in-person event includes general lactation education, wellness, food, prizes, and representatives from community health providers. Attendees must register.
- Hella Plants Market Sacramento – 11 a.m.- 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, at the Clara, 1425 24th St. Expect a diverse selection of plants, interactive workshops led by plant experts and creative enthusiasts, a mouthwatering array of food options and a laid-back and welcoming atmosphere that encourages connection and conversation. - Soulful Saturdays ft. Jaron Heim Jr. – 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, at Harlow’s. Jaron Heim Jr. is a musician, artist, producer, and entertainer out of Sacramento. Tickets are $33.
- The Art of Sistahood Sacramento – Noon-3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 1, at 1913 Del Paso Blvd. The Art of Sistahood is a color-coordinated brunch and day party to honor and celebrate friendship among women. Choose what color you want to wear by choosing the ticket of that color. With a live DJ, fabulous food vendors, and performance by top local and international poets, vocalists and comedians, prepare to be more than entertained. Tickets are $55.
- Essence of Black Girlhood Film & Street Festival – 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 1, at the Guild Theater. The documentary explores the marginalization and associated harms experienced during Black girlhood and celebrates the resilience and strength found in adulthood. Experience the power and beauty of black girlhood through a film that showcases their stories, struggles and triumphs. After the screening, take a stroll through an art gallery featuring local Black artists and a street festival featuring a selection of food, music vendors and games. Free and open to the public, attendees of the screening must reserve a ticket.
- AfroSocaLove: Sacramento One Love Festival – 4-10 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 1, at the Sacramento Automotive Museum. Featuring local business vendors, food vendors, live DJ’s and performances, photo booths and giveaways. Tickets are $20.
