Mardi Gras, a festive celebration deeply rooted in the culture of New Orleans, has come to the West. Sacramento has enthusiastically joined the ranks of cities embracing the spirit of this vibrant celebration. The Sac Town Mardi Gras, a non-profit organization founded by Joseph Thomas, a native of New Orleans, has picked up the torch for this cultural extravaganza locally.
Last week, the Krewes of Kings Parade, an important event of the Mardi Gras season, took place in Sacramento, attracting a diverse crowd of several hundred revelers, including both residents with New Orleans roots and those eager to immerse themselves in the magic of the tradition. The two-hour parade commenced at the Oak Park Community Center, making its way through the streets of Broadway, ending in a gathering at McClatchy Park.

Led by the Nolacal Second Liners, an organization dedicated to bringing the spirit of New Orleans’ Second Line marching band to Sacramento, the parade featured multiple dance groups, spanning various age groups, bringing energy alongside creative floats and rap performances by local artists.
Dre Benjamin, the leader of the Nolacal Second Liners, emphasized the nature of the Mardi Gras celebration: “Itโs inclusive to all people. It brings communities together.”
Among the attendees was Susan Ramon, affectionately known as Louisanna Sue, a New Orleans native who migrated to Sacramento in 1980 and shared Thomasโs vision to bring Mardi Gras to Sacramento. Ramon has previously organized Mardi Gras celebrations in Old Sacramento, drawing crowds of over 25,000.

โIโm happy that Mardi Gras has spread all over,โ Ramon said. โIt’s a free parade with beads and music and joy.โ
While the Krewes of Kings Parade was a main attraction, Sac Town Mardi Gras has more festivities lined up. Additional events include a Gumbo Parade that will occur on February 17, 2024.
