Sacramento’s Most Powerful and Influential Black Leaders
ABOUT THOMAS DONALDSON
Thomas Donaldson’s name is inseparable from Florin Square — the largest collaboration of Black-owned businesses in Northern California and one of the most vital cultural centers for Sacramento’s Black community. While many know him as a veteran entrepreneur, real estate investor, and business owner, his true legacy is seen in the walls and walkways of Florin Square — also known as Sacramento’s Black Wall Street — where culture, commerce, and community converge.
Born in Homestead, Pennsylvania, Donaldson served 14 years in the U.S. Air Force before channeling his discipline and technical training into a six-decade career spanning aerospace, engineering, software, and real estate. After earning degrees in Industrial Technology and Computer Programming from Yuba College and San José State University, he built a life defined by hard work, mentorship, and responsibility.
When he purchased Florin Square Plaza in 2003 — a 74,000-square-foot complex — he envisioned a gathering place for Black entrepreneurship, culture, and ownership. Today, under Donaldson Properties, Florin Square is home to dozens of Black-owned businesses, including the Sojourner Truth African Heritage Museum, the Nubian Marketplace, and countless small enterprises that embody Sacramento’s creative and economic vitality.
Donaldson, alongside his wife Robin and daughter Samantha, continues to oversee the property with purpose and pride. His quiet leadership has helped preserve one of Sacramento’s most important cultural institutions — a space built not only of brick and mortar, but of history, hope, and heritage.
