Malik Martin graduated from West Campus High School at 16 and pursued a Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior degree at UC Davis. He has actively engaged in internships and volunteer opportunities benefiting the Greater Sacramento community, including coaching at his former high school and assisting at the boys and girls club. In 2023, Martin was accepted into Avenue Medicine (AvenueM), a UC Davis Medical School program designed to increase diversity among physicians from underserved areas. At a young age, he took on the responsibility of supporting his family due to his parents’ and grandparents’ health issues, including his father’s leukemia and his mother’s disabilities, becoming their primary caregiver, gaining a profound understanding of life’s struggles and the importance of lived experience.
If you could grab coffee or a meal with any historical Black figure or current influential African American person, who would it be and what would you ask them?
I would pick Frederick Douglass, and would offer him a meal and likely bombard him with questions, but the most important question I would ask is about his mentality. How did you keep yourself willing to push forward, despite all of the adversity you faced, and what legacy would you want me to leave in your footsteps? What legacy that you left behind do you think is the most important?
We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our “30 Under 30” sponsors for their generous support:
