A New Generation Of Black Excellence

By Larry Lee | OBSERVER Publisher

At The Sacramento OBSERVER, we believe in the power of legacy — and in the brilliance of those who will shape what comes next. That belief is what inspired the creation of the 30 Under 30 Awards nearly 20 years ago, a celebration of young African American leaders in the Sacramento region who are not only excelling in their fields but also creating new pathways for our community’s future.

For more than 60 years, The OBSERVER has served as the trusted voice of Black Sacramento. From the Civil Rights Movement to the present day, we’ve documented our community’s triumphs, challenges, and transformations. But today’s generation faces a new kind of complexity: navigating systemic barriers while building careers, challenging norms, healing generational wounds, and leading with innovation, heart, and vision. This year’s 30 honorees reflect that dynamic spirit.

This program is about more than recognition — it’s about investment. We want these young leaders to know that they are seen, valued, and supported by the very community they strive to uplift. By honoring them, we are also honoring the elders, mentors, teachers, and communities that nurtured their growth.

This initiative is also part of The OBSERVER’s commitment to evolving as a media institution — telling stories not only of struggle, but of excellence and imagination. We are proud to use our platform to shine a light on local brilliance and to affirm that leadership can look like us, sound like us, and lead us forward with integrity.

To the honorees: this is your moment — but it’s also a marker. Our community is looking to you not just to succeed, but to continue redefining what success looks like. May you remain bold, grounded, and unapologetically committed to your purpose.

And to everyone who nominated a young person — whether they were selected this year or not — thank you. Your recognition of these excellent young people signals that Sacramento is a city that values Black talent, lifts up Black voices, and believes in building a future that includes us all.

Congratulations to the 2025 Class of 30 Under 30. We’re proud of you. We believe in you. And we can’t wait to see what you do next.
