Albert Hicks Jr. was born Jan 12, 1922 in Camden, Alabama, to the late Albert Hicks Sr. and Daisy Wainwright Hicks. Hicks joined the US Army to serve in WWII. On June 30, 1943, Albert united in marriage to Gertrude Davis in Mobile, Alabama. After his honorable discharge from the U.S. Army in 1945, they relocated to Sacramento where Albert joined First English Lutheran Church located in the Oak Park neighborhood. Hicks worked at the Sacramento Army Depot where he began as a forklift operator and electronic technician.
Hicks joined the boards of the Glen Elder Neighborhood Council and the Sacramento Area Economic Opportunity Council (SAEOC). The SAEOC established the Sacramento Head Start Program. He was also an Executive Board Member of the Golden Empire Council, Boy Scouts of America and served as Assistant Scoutmaster. Hicks received the District Eight Recognition Award, which reads in part “Albert Hicks has demonstrated commitment, pride, determination and love for his community.”
Loved ones say Hicks was always full of wisdom and advice, and seemed to live life his way and on his own terms. His faith kept him going, while maintaining his stubbornness, and a sense of humor.
Hicks leaves to cherish his memory seven children: John Albert Hicks, Carolyn Hicks, Sonja Jones (Eddie), Edison Hicks (Linda), Sharon Lockett, Duane Hicks (Debra), Linda Jackson (Donnie); 13 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, nephew Louis Watts, nieces Dorothy Wilkerson and Valerie Stewart; many loving cousins and friends.
