OBSERVER Senior Staff Writer Genoa Barrow sat down with Southern California-based author and poet Sojourner Kincaid Rolle to speak about her new children’s book, “Free at Last: A Juneteenth Poem.”
“Free at Last” is a deeply emotional, evocative free verse by poet and activist Sojourner Kincaid Rolle. It traces the solemnity and celebration of Juneteenth from its 1865 origins in Galveston, Texas, to contemporary observances all over the United States. “Free at Last” is an ode to the strength of Black Americans and a call to remember and honor a holiday that reverberates far beyond the borders of Texas.
Sojourner Kincaid Rolle is a poet, playwright and environmental educator. She served as poet laureate of Santa Barbara from 2015-2017. She also is the author of “The Mellow Yellow Global Umbrella,” a book of poems for young people.
The book is beautifully illustrated by Alex Bostic, an associate professor of art at Mississippi State University.
