Dr. Alice A. Huffman, immediate past president of the California-Hawaii State Conference of the NAACP, is being honored by the organization she led for more than 20 years.
The organization will commemorate Black History Month by inducting Dr. Huffman during its Ninth Annual Legacy Hall of Fame ceremony. The event will be held virtually on Monday, February 1. A VIP reception is set for 5:30 p.m., with the program to begin at 6:00 p.m.
Dr. Huffman recently stepped down as president of the state NAACP. The tribute event will feature presentations from California’s most formidable and respected leaders, live music and two virtual event receptions.
Former Assembly Speaker and Hall of Famer Willie L. Brown Jr. will serve as emcee. He’ll be joined for the tribute by U.S. senators Alex Padilla and Steven Bradford; California Secretary of State Shirley Weber; Congressmembers Karen Bass and Barbara Lee; Assemblymembers Reggie Jones-Sawyer and Sydney Kamlager; former state lawmakers Diane E. Watson and Roderick D. Wright; Superintendent Tony Thurmond; former Sacramento mayor Kevin Johnson; Dezie Woods-Jones, president of Black Women Organized For Political Action; and others.
The Legacy Hall of Fame honors those who work and support the mission of the NAACP which is to ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of rights for all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and discrimination. Past inductees include former Lt. Governor Mervyn Dymally; former Assemblymember Gwen Moore; former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice; and Lloyd Dean, President and CEO of Dignity Health. The Legacy Hall of Fame event benefits local unit capacity building, racial equity advocacy efforts, youth leadership programs, CA/HI NAACP Lobby Day, leadership development initiatives and programs for the year.
