FARMINGTON, UTAH — Local professional golfer Cameron Champ is looking like one of the hottest golfers in the world after a strong showing in last week’s Lecom Health Challenge in Clymer, New York. Champ is coming off four consecutive top-10 finishes, including two top-5 performances and his first hole-in-one.

Champ, 23, is carrying the hot momentum into the Web.com Tour’s Utah Championship this week at the Oakridge Country Club in Farmington, Utah.

On the first day of this week’s tournament, Champ shot a bogie-free10-under par for a 61 and led by two strokes after the first round. Champ had 10 birdies on the first day of the tournament which offers a $700,000 purse.

The impressive outing actually gave Champ chance to shoot an elusive 59 with the 17th and 18th holes left. The 61 tied the course record. The score is Champ’s lowest score as a professional.

The long-hitting Champ has statistically been one of the best players on the tour. He currently ranks first in driving distance and ball striking and is fifth in scoring average (69.4), however, he failed to finish in the top 10 in his first 10 tournaments.

Champ ranks 27th on the Web.com Tour money list with nearly $124,000. He’ll need to crack the top 25 to earn a spot on the PGA Tour
