SACRAMENTO – The only thing square about this granny is the creations she brings to life every day through her crotchet hooks and knitting needles.
Loved ones gathered last week to celebrate their “purl” — Sacramento Centenarian Beulah Golden Murchison on the occasion of her 106th birthday. The milestone celebration was held at the Asbury Park Nursing Home, where Mrs. Murchison resides.
Mrs. Murchison, a native of Oklahoma, was born on August 25, 1906. Before calling the Sacramento area home, she also lived in Arkadelphia, Arkansas for a time.
She was married to Floyd Murchison for 49 years. The couple had nine children together— Paul, Mae, Carrie Jean, Ola, Minnie Sue and four who are deceased, Edward, Fred, Donell and Benjamin.
An active member of her community, Mrs. Murchison holds charter memberships in a number of organizations including the Foresthill Safety Club, Sojourner Truth Temple #135 of North Highlands and Eastern Star Electra Star Chapter #6.
For many years, she was an active member of the Christ Temple Missionary Baptist Church. She worked as a receptionist and as a cook for nine years at the Oak Park Preschool. She also volunteered daily at the nearby Women’s Civic Improvement Center.
At 106, Mrs. Murchison likes to “stay busy.” In addition to her knitting and crocheting, she also loves to read and plays the piano several times a day. Her favorite songs are “Over In Bealuh Land,” which bears her name and “Until We Meet Again, God Be With You.”
Several generations of Mrs. Murchison’s family were on hand at the party to sing their matriarch’s praises.
