BIG Day of Giving is Coming Up

SACRAMENTO – Nearly 400 local non-profit organizations are looking to get a much needed financial shot in the arm as they participate in the BIG Day of Giving on May 6. The BIG Day of Giving is a 24-hour online giving challenge. The goal is to raise at least $1 million for the Sacramento region. The challenge, part of a national effort, encourages locals to donate money to their favorite organizations. Donations can be made online on May 6 at

Participating non-profits that people can donate to include Celebration Arts; the Center for Fathers and Families; Images Theatre Company; the Nehemiah Emerging Leaders Program; the Roberts Family Development Center; the Sojourner Truth Multicultural Art Museum; Sacramento Area Congregations Together; SacCultural Hub Media Foundation; St. Hope Public Schools; the Sacramento Chapter of the Links, Inc.; Shoulder To Shoulder; Sisters of Nia, Inc, a mentoring program for African American middle school aged girls; and 916 Ink, a local program that introduces inner-city youth to poetry and writing and then publishes their work.

Donors can look up organizations by name or browse a list of categories for a group to support. Participating non-profits will also benefit from a pool of matching funds. They can also compete for prize challenges throughout the day and motivate their donors to help them win extra cash. The organization that receives the first donation at 12:00 a.m. will receive $2,500 in the Aerojet Rocketdyne Blast Off Challenge. The organization that raises the most money from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. will receive an additional $2,500. There also also social media challenges that encourage participating groups to spread the word and get their supporters involved.

The GiveLocalNow movement, which was launched to increase local charitable giving, held its first-ever, local online giving day was held on April 29, 2013 – the Arts Day of Giving. On that day, $525,000 was raised for 78 arts groups. This year’s goal is to reach 5,000 donors.
There will be a “Halftime Celebration” event hosted by Sacramento Region Community Foundation at Fremont Park, 1515 Q St, Sacramento, CA from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to mark the halfway point in the day.

The BIG Day of Giving is a collaboration of GiveLocalNow and the Sacramento Regional Community Foundation, Yolo Community Foundation and Placer Community Foundation.
