“Our Stories in Quilts: Quilts That Are Inspired by the Stories in Our Lives”

c538e2_f08040e69209f19129c1e0940d08ddf7.jpg_srz_420_445_85_22_0.50_1.20_0SACRAMENTO – In celebration of Black History Month, Sisters Quilting Collective (SQC) will host its Third Annual Quilt Exhibit “Our Stories in Quilts: Quilts That Are Inspired by the Stories in Our Lives” at The Brickhouse Art Gallery. The exhibit, highlighting African American quilters and quilts, will run February 1-15.

The 2014 program will feature a keynote address by Karen Boutte, author and noted quilter, opening and closing receptions, presentations by the 2014 exhibit quilters, quilting story circles, children’s quilting activities, presentations and fashion show by fabric and wearable artists, a presentation on the historical significance of African American quilters and quilting, raffles and a presentation and prize drawing for the 2014 SQC Opportunity Quilt.

An opening reception will be held on Saturday, February 1 from 1:30-6:00 p.m.. Ms. Boutte, known as the “Quilt Diva” will speak from 1:30-3:00 p.m. Cost to attend her presentation is $25 for members SQC members and $30 for non-members. Ms. Boutte is the author of, “Delightful Diva Designs, Wonderful Whimsical Wearables.” Ms. Boutte has been teaching and lecturing since 1996 and is a nationally known quilt instructor, lecturer, author and designer of original quilts and garments. She has been profiled in Quilting Arts and Expressions magazines and has appeared on HGTV’s “Simply Quilts” and “Kaye’s Quilting Friends” on PBS.

Story Circles will feature locals talking about their family quilts from 4:30-6:00 p..m. This portion of the event is free and open to the public.

Festivities continue on Saturday, February 8 with Community Day. Activities include a Children and Parent‘s Quilting Corner from 12:30-3:30 p.m. and SQC’s Fabric Art Showcase from 4:00-6:00 p.m. On Thursday, February 13, there will also be a presentation of film, “The Skin Quilt Project” from 5:30-8:00 p.m. Discussion will be led by Cordia Wade. Cost is $3 for members and $5 for non-members. To participate, RSVP by calling (916) 484-5025 by February 10. A closing reception is set for Saturday, February 15 from 10:00 a.m. -3:30 p.m. Cost is $5 for members and $10 for non-members.
