NASHVILLE – Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson was inducted into the 30th Annual National High School Hall of Fame at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center in Nashville, Tennessee.
Mayor Johnson joins other notable athletes including former NBA player Fred Hoiberg and 1971 Heisman Trophy winner Pat Sullivan as one of 12 national inductees in this year’s class.
Upon learning of his selection, Mayor Johnson said, “On behalf of the countless outstanding high school athletes who have come from Sacramento and California and who used sports as a pathway to higher education, it’s an incredible honor to be inducted into the National High School Hall of Fame.”
As a dominant point guard for Sacramento High School’s basketball team, Mayor Johnson led the state of California in scoring in 1983, averaging 32.5 points per game. After becoming an All-Pac-10 performer at the University of California, Berkeley, Mayor Johnson was selected 7th overall in the 1987 NBA Draft and played 12 seasons with the Phoenix Suns, earning three All-Star nods. Mayor Johnson also excelled at baseball in high school and was drafted by the Oakland A’s before focusing on basketball.
Mayor Johnson joins a select number of Sacramento-area athletes to enter the High School Hall of Fame including baseball coach Guy Anderson of Cordova, basketball player Denise Curry of Davis, swimmer Debbie Meyer of Rio Americano, and three-sport athlete Karen Smith of Rio Americano.
The National High School Hall of Fame was started in 1982 to honor high school athletes, coaches, contest officials, administrators, performing arts coaches/directors and others for their extraordinary achievements and accomplishments in high school sports and activity programs. This year’s class increases the number in the Hall of Fame to 398.
